Sony NEX-VG900 Brings Full Frame Power to Video Pros
In order to get full frame video capture, video pros must turn to DLSRs and sacrifice the video-first form factor they’re used to and invest in new accessories. That is, until now. Enter the NEX-VG900 Handycam® camcorder—the world’s first full-frame, interchangeable-lens camcorder.
The NEX-VG900 is a game-changing camera that gives independent video professionals and enthusiasts best-in-class performance in a video-first form factor—and it starts with the new 24.3MP Exmor™ 35mm Full-Frame CMOS sensor.
Designed from the ground up by Sony engineers, this full-frame sensor is loaded with Sony-only innovations for the best image quality possible from a Sony video camera. Now, videographers can capture beautifully detailed, clean images even when lighting isn’t optimal, thanks to the sensor’s high ISO sensitivity and ability to capture a wide dynamic range.
Behind the scenes, the improved BIONZ® engine processes the massive amounts of data from the full-frame sensor at extreme speed without image loss. Brides look as beautiful as they did the moment they said “I do.” In addition to 1080p 24p/60p/60i AVCHD video, the NEX-VG900 captures 24MP stills in RAW and JPEG, and outputs uncompressed video from clean HDMI out.
Enhanced imaging is just the start for the NEX-VG900. It features Sony’s Multi Interface shoe—an ISO-compatible hot shoe that accepts a broad range of accessories including the new Sony XLR-K1M XLR adapter kit for balanced audio input into the camera. This should bring wide-eyed smiles from your video customers. Their existing XLR equipment will be right at home with the NEX-VG900. Shooters can also rely on the Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone for immersive 5.1- or 2-channel sound.
The Sony XLR-K1M XLR adapter, unlike XLR solutions for other DSLRs and video cameras, delivers balanced audio input all the way to the record preamps for the A99 and NEX-VG series cameras. It’s compatible with a variety of microphones and provides 2 XLR jacks with separate level control for each channel.
All of this innovation comes packaged in a compact video-first form factor. It has professional-grade styling that’s sure to make an impression at any shoot. Once in action, the new design really improves workflow.
Sony’s highly praised XGA OLED Tru-finder™—the same found on the NEX-7 and A77V—makes its way to the NEX-VG900. New hardware buttons give fast, direct access to shutter speed, gain, iris and white balance. With the accurate, high contrast image of the EVF and key controls at their fingertips, shooters never have to take their eye off the action.
The NEX-VG900 opens a new world of lens options to video pros. For full-frame capture, Sony includes the LA-EA3 A-mount lens adapter in the box, which takes all Sony A-mount lenses including Carl Zeiss® optics. The adapter also allows a host of third-party lenses to be used with the NEX-VG900. Without the adapter, the camera accepts the entire family of Sony E-mount lenses, plus all other third-party E-mount glass. Now videographers have more ways to capture their vision than ever before.
Full-frame sensor. XLR compatibility. Wider range of accessories. How many film festivals do you have to win to afford the NEX-VG900? None. This camera comes in at an MSRP of just $3,299 with the LA-EA3 adapter included.
Now, there’s a video-first camera that delivers the professional features and full-frame video quality that’s actually afford.
Making the Best Better
NEX-VG30 and NEX-VG30H
The 16.1MP APS-C NEX-VG30 picks up where the NEX-VG20 left off. With many of the same improvements found on its full-frame sibling, the NEX-VG30 is poised to be a hot seller.
The NEX-VG30H kit adds the new optically stabilized 18-200mm E-mount zoom lens specifically designed for video. The lens features a built-in see-saw zoom lever giving videographers smooth zooming up to 11x. With the lens’ 3 zoom speeds, plus the 2 speeds provided by the NEX-VG30 body, you get a total of 6 zoom speeds, including a super-slow setting of 30 seconds fully zoomed.
